Thyme

Thyme essential oil is extracted from the leaves and flowers of several species of the Thymus genus. The most commonly used species for essential oil production are:

  1. Thymus vulgaris: This species is also known as common thyme or garden thyme, and is the most widely used species for essential oil production. It is native to the Mediterranean region but is now grown all over the world, including in Europe, North America, and Australia.

  2. Thymus zygis: Also known as Spanish thyme, this species is native to the western Mediterranean region and is mainly grown in Spain and Portugal.

  3. Thymus serpyllum: This species is commonly known as wild thyme or creeping thyme and is native to Europe, Asia, and North Africa. It is mainly grown in Europe, particularly in France and Spain.

  4. Thymus capitatus: This species is also known as Lebanese thyme or oregano thyme and is native to the Mediterranean region. It is mainly grown in North Africa, Israel, and Lebanon.

The growing regions for these thyme species depend on their natural habitats and their adaptability to different climatic conditions. However, thyme is typically grown in regions with a warm Mediterranean climate, with well-draining soil and plenty of sunshine. Some of the major thyme-producing countries include Spain, France, Morocco, and Tunisia.
