    Arbuste dressé ou grimpant à feuilles simples, entières, alternes, non stipulées, penninerves. Fleurs actinomorphes ⚥, ♂ et ♀ en grappes multi-flores axillaires ou terminales. Sépales libres entre eux, imbriqués dans le bouton floral. Pétales libres entre eux sauf à la base pourvue d'une ligule membraneuse. Étamines 9-13 libres entre elles, insérées sur un androgynophore; anthères introrses à fentes de déhiscence longitudinales. Étamines remplacées par des staminodes dans les fleurs ♀. Ovaire supère, réduit dans les fleurs ♂; 4-5 loges multi-ovulées dans les fleurs ♀. Placentation pariétale. Ovules campylotropes. Baie globuleuse contenant plusieurs loges monospermes. Graines réniformes.
