General Information

Rhizome creeping, 2-3 mm thick, tufted at apex with brownish, subclathrate, lanceolate scales mostly 2-3 mm long. Fronds of somewhat flaccid texture, 5-20(-25) cm long, closely distichous, dimorphic, the sterile ones spreading and much shorter than the fertile ones; fertile fronds erect, the stipes 4-17 cm long, bearing a few scattered lance-attenuate scales. Fertile blades lanceolate, narrowly deltate, or oblong-deltate, 6-12 cm long, 2-4.5 cm broad at or near the base, acuminate at the subentire apex, with 3-6 pairs of free, altemate, ascending pinnae; 2-pinnate at base, the lowest 1-3 pairs of pinnae with one or two free acroscopic pinnules, also sometimes a free basiscopic pinnule on the basal pinnae; middle pinnae oblong, 1-2.5 cm long, 4-8 mm wide above the auriculate base, obtuse to acutish at the serrulate apex; veins oblique, simple or once-forked, ending in marginal teeth. Sori nearly straight to slightly subarcuate, mostly unpaired, 2-5 mm long; indusium translucentmembranous with minutely erose margin.

    Distribution

    General Distribution. Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico.Distribution in Puerto Rico. Rather numerous collections from the northwestem part of the island, and one disjunct specimen from the southwest; recorded from Arecibo, Hatillo, Isabela, Peñuelas, Quebradillas, San Sebastian, and Utuado. T o be expected also in Camuy.Habitat. In clay soil of moist shaded limestone sinkholes and ravines, and on mossy limestone ledges at low to lower middle elevations (65-280 m), locally frequent.
