Morphology

Like D. bolusiana but flowers magenta to white with rostellum arms exserted. Tuberous geophyte, with shortly hairy stem, up to 200 mm tall. Leaves 2 or 3, cauline, ovate. Flower 1, magenta to white. Terrestrial herb, 0.09-0.14 m high, pubescent. Leaves 2, cauline, alternate, ovate, sheaths and margins pubescent, purple below, 19-30 x 9-25 mm. Inflorescence 1-flowered; bracts ovate, acute, 10-12 x 4-6. Flowers magenta or white or white flushed with pink, petals with green spots. Sepals: median sepal ovate, acute, sac-like, 6-10 x 5-8 mm, 7-8 mm deep; lateral sepals obovate, acute, 10-15 x 3-5 mm; spur saccate 2-6 mm deep. Petals adnate to median sepal, curved, falcate, clawed, oblong, acute, 4-8 x 4-5 mm. Lip free from gynostemium, claw 5 mm long, blade deeply cupshaped 2.5 mm long, appendage triangular, apex pubescent, 2.5 mm long. Flowering time Aug.-Oct. Plants pubescent, (45-) 90-140 mm; leaves 2, cauline, alternate, ovate to broadly ovate, sheath, margins and veins beneath pubescent, purple below, mostly 19-30 x 9-25 mm. Inflorescences 1-flowered; bracts ovate, acute, 10-12 x 4-6 mm. Flowers magenta, sometimes pure white or white flushed with pink, petals with green spots; ovary purple, ovoid, (5-) 10-12 mm long.       Richtersveld, Steinkopf, Springbok, Loeriesfontein, Calvinia-Nieuwoudtville Plateau, Roggeveld, Witteberg Mountains, Laingsburg, Uniondale, Humansdorp. Richtersveld in the Northern Cape through the western Karoo with a single record from near Humansdorp. Richtersveld and W Karoo to Witteberg, Langkloof.
