General Information

Dioecious tree up to 4.0 m high, with few branches; trunk ca 6.0 cm diam. Branchlets grayish-reddish-corticate, tips puberulous. Leaves obovate-lanceolate, apex subcaudate-acuminate for 2.0-3.5 cm, base long-attenuate, subcoriaceous, glabrous above, very shortly pubescent beneath, sinuate-dentate to -serrate, 34.0-50.0 cm long, 11.0-16.0 cm broad, lateral nerves 16-18(-20) pairs rather straight-ascending, looping before the margin, prominent beneath, reticulation of veins and veinlets rather inconspicuous beneath; petiole puberulous, 4.0-9.0 cm long; stipules caducous. Flowers [male] few, arranged in contracted racemes or subfasciculate from defoliate axils, or from trunk; pedicels pubescent, up to 7.0 mm long. Sepals 2 (rarely 3), elliptic-suborbicular, short-pubescent dorsally, 5.0-7.0 mm diam. Petals ca 7, ovate-elliptic to oblong, white, glabrous, 7.0-12.0 mm long, 5.0-6.0 mm broad. Stamens ca 30; filaments hirsute, 0.5 mm long; anthers subhirsute, ca 4.0 mm long. [female] flowers: sepals 2 or 3, ovoid-orbicular, short-pubescent dorsally, up to 10.0 mm long and 5.0 mm broad below mature fruit. Petals not known. Ovary pubescent, shortly 10-winged; styles 5 or 6, densely hairy. Fruit ovoid-oblongoid, (5.0-) 6.0-8.0 cm long, 3.5-4.0 cm diam, puberulous, with (6-)10 vertical membranaceous irregularly sinuate-dentate up to 7.0 mm high wings, dehiscent with 5 valves, on thick peduncle ca 2.0 cm long; pericarp fibrose-coriaceous, 3.0-4.0 mm thick; seeds polyhedric, ca 1.0 cm long.

    Western Colombia; in lowland, partly coastal forest at low altitudes. Apparently related to Carpotroche longifolia.
