General Information

Forms (possibly hybrid) approaching Blandfordia nobilis may be encountered in the southern portions of its range. B. intermedia Herb. is apparently applicable to one of these. Forms approaching B. cunninghamii (I.Bowden , NSW 109401) in the Blue Mountains possibly represent hybrids with that species. In addition, abnormal forms with more than 15 apparently sterile flowers up to 6 cm long, pedicels up to 9 cm long and leaf-like bracts up to 20 cm long have been observed near Caloundra (Qld) and Bulahdelah (N.S.W.). No taxonomic importance is given here to these latter forms as they appear insect- or virus-affected.

Leaves to c. 70 cm long; lamina folded or flat, channelled, keeled, 2-5 mm wide; margins somewhat thickened but flat or ±inrolled, crenulate-scabrid. Inflorescence loosely racemose, to c. 1.75 m long, usually 3-9-flowered; peduncle to c. 7 mm diam.; pedicels to 4.5 cm long, as long as to much longer than subtending bract. Perianth usually 3.5-6 cm long, red with yellow lobes or wholly yellow, with a slight bloom; tube turbinate, gradually expanded upwards with slight shoulder in lower third, 1.8-3 cm wide at throat; lobes ±semicircular but tips ultimately acute, to c. 12 mm long. Filaments to c. 3 cm long, attached from slightly below middle to towards base of tube; anthers oblong, 3-4.5 mm long. Capsule to c. 6 cm long including style; stipe to c. 6 cm long.
