G.Bentham's Blandfordia grandiflora var. elongata may represent a hybrid between this species and B. grandiflora . Blandfordia ×flammea-elegans W.G.Sm., Floral Mag. n. ser. t. 134 (1874), was claimed by the author to apply to a hybrid between B. cunninghamii and B. flammea (= B. grandiflora ). No origin was given for the material concerned, and apparently no specimen of it has been preserved. Leaves to c. 1 m long; lamina flat with veins and midrib slightly raised, 4-12 mm wide; margins ±hyaline and slightly revolute, smooth. Inflorescence a contracted umbel-like raceme, to c. 0.8 m long, 12-30-flowered; peduncle to c. 8 mm diam.; pedicels to c. 4.5 cm long, about as long as to much exceeding subtending bract. Perianth usually 3-6 cm long, red with yellow lobes; tube narrowly cylindrical in lower quarter to third but expanded abruptly and bell-shaped upwards, 2-3 cm wide at throat; lobes ovate, acute, to 12 mm long. Filaments to c. 3.5 cm long, attached below middle of perianth tube; anthers ±oblong or tapered slightly upwards, 3.8-5 mm long. Capsule to c. 9 cm long including style; stipe to c. 4 cm long. Found in damp shallow sandy and peaty soils, often on cliff edges. Illustrations: J.D.Hooker, Bot. Mag. 94: t. 5734 (1868); J.Ingram, Baileya 13(2): 50 (1965).
