Trees 10-20 m tall; bark gray-brown. Leaves 25-75 cm, sparsely hairy in leaf axils or glabrous; petiole 10-25 cm; petiolules 2-10 mm; leaflets 7-15, green adaxially, green to glaucous abaxially, narrowly elliptic, rhombic-oblong, oblong-lanceolate, or ovate-lanceolate, slightly oblique, 6-26 × 3-9 cm, papery or leathery, glabrous adaxially, minutely pubescent abaxially, base obtuse to rounded to cuneate, margin entire, apex acuminate to acute; lateral veins in 8-15 pairs. Inflorescence 20-36 cm. Flowers 3-5 cm in diam., pedicel 2-4 cm. Calyx 1.5-2.3 × 1.2-2.7 cm, 5-lobed. Petals white to pink, becoming darker with age, red striate, broadly spatulate to obovate-cuneate, 1.8-2 × 1-1.5 cm, base rounded, apex notched; upper petal hoodlike, covering stamens and style. Filaments 2.5-3 cm, hairy at base, curving downward apically. Ovary and style hairy; style 3-4 cm, bent abruptly downward apically. Capsule ellipsoid-globose to subglobose to ovoid or obovoid, 3-5.5 × 2-3.5 cm, warty, minutely hairy; valves 1.2-5 mm thick; fruiting pedicel 2.5-3.5 cm. Seeds red, ellipsoid-globose, compressed, 1.5-2.5 × 1.2-1.8 cm, smooth. Fl. Mar-Sep, fr. Aug-Apr. 2n = 18*. Tree, up to 25 m high; bark smooth, greyish; twigs lenticellate; young shoots, leaf rachis and inflorescences axis puberulous to pubescent. Leaves alternate, imparipinnate, 30–80 cm long; stipules very early caducous; leaflets sessile or shortly petiolulate, 4–8 pairs; opposite or subopposite; membranous, lanceolate–oblong to ovate-lanceolate, 8–25 by 2.5–6 cm; glabrous on both surfaces or slightly hairy on midrib; flower surface glaucous; base cuneate to rounded; unequal sided, except on the terminal leaflet; apex acute to acuminate; lateral veins 10–15 pairs. Inflorescence a terminal raceme, up to 40 cm long. Flowers showy, pink, 3.5–4 cm long, 3.5–4 cm diam.; pedicels 2–3 cm long, puberulous. Calyx large, campanulate, teeth shallow, ca 2 cm long; pubescent on both surfaces. Petals all similar, concave; broadly obovate to suborbicular, 1.8–2 by 1.8–2 cm; apex rounded; base cuneate and gradually, narrowing into the claw; claw about half as long as the petal. Stamens 8, filaments stout, terete, 2.5–3 cm long; pubescent, close together in fine group; all declining towards the upper side of the flower and curved downwards. Ovary broadly, ellipsoid to globular, 3–4 mm long; sessile, pubescent; style 3.5–4 cm long. Fruit spindle-shaped, 4 cm long, dehiscent; the valves 1.5–2 cm wide. Seeds ellipsoid, one to two in each valve, ca 20 by 12 mm. Thailand, China: Human, Gweizhou, Guangdong and Yunnan (type), and Vietnam (Tonkin). In flower montane forest, at 1500 m alt.
