General Information

Trees to 6 m tall, or shrubs, the twiglets smooth, glabrous, occasionally con- tracted below the nodes, the latter well spaced, occasionally rough with the rem- nants of stipules. Leaves lanceolate to ovate lanceolate, 6-19 cm long, 2-5 cm wide, acute or deltoid at the apex, acuminate, the acumen deltoid to attenuate triangular, to 1.5 cm long, the base acute, cuneate or obtuse, the costa promi- nulous above, prominent beneath, the lateral veins 10-15(-17), widely arcuate, with 1-2 subparallel, irregular, soon branching smaller veins between 2 lateral veins, the intervenal areas spreading reticulate, papyraceous, glabrate, often vil- lose on the costa or also on the veins beneath; petioles to 2 cm long, glabrous; stipules usually persistent, connate, the sheath cylindrical, occasionally com- pressed cylindrical, to 4.5 mm long, truncate, each part with 2 erect or somewhat spreading awns, usually ca. 2 times the length of the sheath, to 11 mm long. Inflorescences terminal, paniculate, oblong or pyramidal, to 15 cm long, to 15 cm wide, the peduncle 2-6 cm long, to 0.2 cm wide, red, the branches red, of 7-8 pairs, the lowermost to 7 cm long, usually strongly ascending, occasionally strict; lowermost bracts subulate, to 0.6 cm long. Flowers pedicellate, the pedicels red; hypanthium ca. 0.5 mm long, glabrous, the calycine cup to 1 mm long, spreading, often with 1-2 minute glands at the sinuses, the lobes 5, oblong or compressed rotund, to 1 mm long, obtuse, usually with a few marginal cilia; corolla yellow or orange (rarely white), cylindrical, 10-15 mm long, petaloid, glabrous except ca. 3 mm above the base of the tube within, the lobes 5, oblong, 1.2-2.0 mm long; stamens 5, the anthers narrowly oblong, ca. 3 mm long, the filaments ca. 1 mm long, attached 3 mm below the mouth; style included or briefly exserted, 5-16 mm long, the shorter style with stigmas to 3.3 mm long, the ovarian disc compressed rotund, ca. 1 mm long. Fruits ovate oblong, to 6 mm long, conspic- uously costate, glabrous, the calyx remnants minute.
